Our Lady of the Rockies is a majestic 90-foot statue of the Virgin Mary, situated atop the Continental Divide, overlooking Butte. It's the fourth largest statue in the United States. It is intended to be a monument to women everywhere, and especially to mothers.
Our Lady of the Rockies is on private land. It originated through the efforts of Bob O'Bill. He promised the Virgin Mary he would build a statue of her if his wife recovered from cancer. His wife recovered, and Bob began construction of what was initially going to be a five-foot high statue.
The small statue envisioned by Bob O'Bill became, through the help of Bob's friends and donations from the local community, the 90-foot statue that exists today. Today, Our Lady of the Rockies is largely supported and maintained by volunteers and private donations.

What to Expect
As you might expect, Our Lady of the Rockies is easy to spot. Head north from Butte, up I-15, and look east. The statue is also lit up at night, so you can easily locate it 24 hours a day. Note that, if you are planning on viewing it from the roadside, you'll want to bring binoculars: Roadside is not really that close to the statue. Reservations are typically required for all tours. Tours are by bus and start in Butte at the Butte Plaza Mall. The round trip from Butte takes a little over two hours. Private vehicles are not allowed.
At the statue, you'll also find a small chapeland observation deck and a Women's Memorial Wall. The chapel is available for weddings and other special events.
Our Lady of the Rockies includes a gift store located at 3100 Harrison Avenue, open Monday thru Saturday, from 10am to 4pm. Give them a call for more information.

My wife and I looked forward to taking the tour and we weren't disappointed. The video before the tour provides a lot of insight into how the statue was built and placed on the mountain. The bus trip to the statue is over one of the roughest roads in the world, but it's worth all the bouncing and rattling around. My wife uses a wheelchair and they were able to accommodate her needs. The statue is impressive from the valley and more so when you stand at its base and see it. We would definitely go back to see it again.
There are several books available in the gift shop that tell the story of how the statue came to be built and the work that went into it.

She stands for all things good, it is amazing the size of the her. From Butte you can see her on any street. She must be comforting for all the mining families that endure daily dangers.

What an engineering marvel, and breathtaking view! We had a great time, from the bumpy ride up the mountain, to seeing the statue up close, venturing inside and seeing all the memorials, to the Big Sky view- worth it!
